So what about Chemo Round 3?

Gavin finished with his 3rd day of chemo Wednesday last week and continued to feel pretty good throughout the weekend. We were feeling pretty cocky...Tam, his nurse, had warned him round 3 would hit him pretty hard and yet he was feeling great. Maybe, we thought, since he experienced more side effects after round 2 then were anticipated that round 3 wouldn't be the monster it had been made out to be. Then came Monday morning...
He woke up more nauseous then usual and had to eat something before even getting out of bed. Yummy toast - so far so good. He decided to take a Kytril for the nausea...uh oh. It stayed down for a good 10 minutes or so. Next, a call to Tam. What do we do if he is so sick that he can't keep meds down? After a few more hugging the porcelain god moments, he finally got in a Kytril and it was off to bed for Gavin. After a long morning nap he wakes up and tries to take some pain meds. Uh oh, more hugging of porcelain and another call in to Tam. After some advice and an appointment for the first thing the next morning things calm down some. Gavin takes another long nap after which he finally can keep food and meds down.
First thing this morning we head to the doctor's office for some fluids and I.V. anti-nausea medicine. They checked his blood and gave him some magnesium but all else is looking good. He has felt much better today. He has been able to eat and drink and be merry. We aren't sure if yesterday was a chemo side effect or the flu virus going around. In any case, Tam is a great nurse who never made me feel silly for calling with concerns. It's amazing how "hurling" which is a normal illness we have all encountered (self-induced or otherwise) takes on this momentous aspect when another illness such as cancer is involved. Take a moment and thank God for your health and the health of your loved ones.
Thank you to everyone who supported us during the healing service last Sunday. A big thanks also to Jack and Christy for putting it together. While we were placing our hands on Gavin (and the others who came up) the hands of God were surrounding us and lifting us up and giving us hope and comfort. We are in the midst of a storm that has sunk many a ship but we will surely praise His Almighty Name.
For those of you who attended early service you might have noticed a few extra people with us. I was fortunate enough to have 3 of my best girlfriends from Ohio drive down for a visit. We had a wonderful time. I am so blessed to have the friends I do, both in Charlotte and Toledo. Thanks for all that you do!
Finally, it is musical week. Drew is doing o.k. so far, not driving us too nuts! Break a leg Drew...we are so proud of you!
As always, thanks for the continued prayers and words of encouragement. We wouldn't want to be going through this without you!
Have a great week y'all!
Love, Maria
